THE LUCID MORSE TUTORIAL
*=*=*=*=*
THIS PROGRAM WAS PROGRAMMED IN THE INTEREST OF AMATEUR RADIO AS IT
SEEMED NO OTHER MORSE TUTORIAL COULD BE FOUND AFFORDING A STEADY
CURRICULUM AND/OR FACILITY FOR PRACTICE AND TESTING WHEN LEARNING
TO RECEIVE MORSE AT A POSITIVE RATE STAGE FOR STAGE.
THIS TUTORIAL CAN TEACH ANYONE DEDICATED TO LEARN, STARTING FROM SCRATCH
AS IT WERE. A LITTLE ENTHUSIASM WILL GET YOU PAST THE MORSE TEST.

If satisfaction incurs, please mention it on any Comms Bbs you might be a
member of. It was programmed originally for the Atari ST Range, this
Amiga version is written and compiled in Amospro using an A500

A VERY SPECIAL NOTE
-----------------------
*****
The NOVICE LICENCE is here.
On April 19th 90 the D.T.I. made an announcement.
There will be two new UK. licence classes.
Amateur Radio (novice) licence 'A' and 'B'.
The class 'A' (novice) will require a morse test of ONLY 5 W.P.M.
So now all you G's without an 'A' licence and CB'ers, in fact
all enthusiasts take note.
The Novice 'A' licence will allow you on to part of THE SHORT WAVE BANDS
IE. Give you the WORLD as well as THE NEXT STREET!
This is an easy first step to the coveted FULL AMATEUR 'A' LICENCE.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If one was asked to strike a match on a piece of wet soap, or shall
we say nail a soft fried egg to the ceiling, it would be quite
reasonable concluding this to be an impossibility.
However, formidable as it may seem, the mastering of morse, is a task
lying well within the bounds of probability, for anyone who can
muster enough determination to see a job through to the end. It calls
simply for tenacity.
The desire to reach this goal is already there, or you would not be
reading this. Furthermore, this tutorial constitutes a vehicle which
can get you there, if you are prepared to devote some of your time to
using it. We are sure you will.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
READ THIS PARAGRAPH AT LEAST TWICE BEFORE MOVING ON, GRASP AND
THOROUGHLY ABSORB IT'S CONTENT.
In order to master morse in half the time, do not take what appears
to be a short cut, and begin simply copying randomized characters.
REASON !, because one has nothing to relate to, regarding that which is
heard. Mastering the 'di dah dit' voice rhythm must first be achieved.
MORSE IS RHYTHMIC SOUND AND NEEDS MUST IT SHOULD BE LEARNED AS SUCH.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
As essentially, the object of the program is to ETCH SOUND RHYTHMS
into ones memory, and because most students will be aspiring
towards THE FULL "A" LICENCE MORSE TEST, it was decided to maintain
throughout the program, 'A CHARACTER RATE' equivalent to 'TWELVE
WORDS PER MINUTE', and vary the DELAY (thinking time) between complete
characters and words.
Thus, the AVERAGE or MEAN rhythms neccessary for the reading of
morse, will be heard more often and etched deeper.
The student is thereby relieved the need to concentrate on an aspect
related to sending, which would in any case be learned from experience,
when the coveted "A" licence is to hand. ie. meticulously measuring gaps.
As the signals heard from any source whatever, must inevitably vary
about the mean which builds up in ones memory, the difference could
be so slight, it will not be noticed.
On the other hand, if one foolishly practices measuring gaps against the
computer clock, expecting a screen result, as some do, remember, only a
machine could produce characters sent with the correct gaps constantly,
because the clock is precise. Even if a professional did this, he would
be very dismayed, 'AS HE WOULD HAVE, WHAT IS KNOWN AS 'A FIST', ie,
a very slight habitual variation regarding gaps in his sending, although
it would be perfectly readable morse. IN FACT, his fist, would in time be
recognisable. RELY on the mean rhythm which will build up in your
memory, THIS will automatically control your hand when operating a key.
It will also be noticed that apart from the one reference screen, morse
in this tutorial, is never depicted graphically as DOTS and DASHES.
If it were, then one would be inclined to voice it as such. Instead, the
DI DAH DIT voice rhythm is used throughout, this, one must think in
terms of, until the sound rhythm proper takes over.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
SUGGESTED CURRICULUM FOR ANYONE STARTING FROM 'SCRATCH'
----------------------------------------------------------
One can of course use this program as desired, the following is
just one way of using it to advantage.
So we go to 'ALPHA' and really begin committing morse symbols to
memory, by using the appropriate phase of this file.
You may at first think it's use is childish, well really it is, but
then it was childish when you sat repeating seven sevens are forty nine
seven sevens are forty nine. IN FACT, THAT, is the only reason today you
know that seven sevens are forty nine! that little rhythm etched in to
your brain so many years ago, every time it is repeated in your mind,
it triggers the terminating part of the rhythm.
By using the screen, no need to look up the symbols first, what you see,
you know will be correct.
IT IS THE ONLY WAY TO COMMIT MORSE TO MEMORY.
-------------------------------------------------
BRAVO
Using this file, you can test yourself with the first group, reverting
back to 'ALPHA' for characters sluggish to define. Always be sure to
voice the di dah dit rhythm PLUS termination.
Learn, practice, and test yourself with each group, mastering each
group before passing on to the next.
CHARLIE
Moving on to the sound phase of each group, after the voice rhythms
are mastered, it is possible to test your self by hearing the sound of
the symbols you have hopefully learned, ie HEAR the RHYTHM, STATE the
LETTER or NUMBER, and CHECK.
You will find yourself inwardly voicing this rhythm, but the sound will
also be registering itself.
Learn, practice, and test yourself reading letters and numbers,
punctuation is not required for the test.
CHARLIE also offers phases pertaining to the full alphabet and total
numbers without a 'check'. Move on to these, only after the other phases
are mastered, then use these two phases OFTEN.
The delay can be regulated at four different settings, so always
master the slower options first.
Finally we can go on to tackling plain language messages. A short
easy to remember message is about as much use to you, as would be a
chocolate oven door to a Cordon Bleu Chef.
The three messages, also on CHARLIE, are a compromise. not too long and
not too short. One in particular uses words and context difficult to
remember. A few numbers also form part of one message, don't let this
throw you. YOU WILL NOT GET CHARACTERS AND NUMBERS MIXED DURING THE TEST
but it will help considerably later.
Try each one periodically, you will get a little further each time, if
you do not make the mistake of adding to previous attempts.
They will be useful longer, if you !!!
USE NEW COPY PAPER EVERY ATTEMPT, AND NOT ADD TO THAT WHICH WAS COPIED
IN THE ATTEMPTS PREVIOUSLY TRIED. !!!
--------------------------------------------------------------------
DELTA
Just as ALPHA could be used for sluggish symbol revising,
So can 'DELTA' be used for sound rhythm sluggish to define. ie. the
sticky ones. When using this file, PLEASE DO NOT MIX LETTERS AND
NUMBERS. ONE or THE OTHER may be selected from the menu.
ECHO
When one can copy letters and numbers reasonably well, it is time
for copying words. The file ECHO, will deliver 300 different words
randomized, in fifteen minute sessions. There is a reason for this.
Although under test, in it's sourse code mode, it ran faultlessly
for four solid hours non stop, when compiled, it would run happilly
for anything between twenty minutes and an hour, then get fed up and
pack in !
This throwing in the towel as it were, was NOT at all constant with
anything, the same would happen, whether randomizing three words or
three hundred words.
It would simply decide enough was enough and lock up.
Rather than deprive you of this useful file, I have put in a timer,
ie. fifteen minutes, to beat it on the draw, it now simply closes
down on time. Should more than a fifteen minute session be required,
just run the file again. (I suspect a little bug in Amospro, unbeknown
to the powers that be,) then again I could be wrong.
Practice with this file often to get out of the habit of trying
to read the word already copied, thus missing the following train of
characters. Hesitation! This is drastic also, get into the habit
of ignoring anything not perfectly copied, after all, an odd character
can often get lost due to QSB or interference.
Plod on regardless word after word, and read them later.
FOXTROT
The RUBBER STAMP QSO, very useful AFTER the morse test is behind
you, but a little time may be spent with it from an interest angle.
GOLF
This is the EISH_TMO system of learning, the file will speak for
itself.
HOTEL
If the sound advice passed on to us from professional sources
has been taken on board, ie, NEVER entertain any aspect of trying
to SEND until one can READ, you will not require to use the file
'HOTEL', until later in your course of learning.
Nevertheless, the file should be examined, whereby the foregoing
crucial point is stressed, and if not already known, the info.
regarding 'MAPLINS' can be appreciated.
The two time bars will prove to be exceedingly useful when the
time comes.
INDIA
This file gives you a write up of A RUBBER STAMP QSO and also a
demonstration of the same in operation.
JULIET
It will be found that procedure signals, though necessary to be
learned at some time, do not form a part of the official test.
Because of this the file is included in orde that prrocedure
signals may be learned, practiced, and a test carried out.

Wishing you every success, and enjoyable use of this program.
